Oliver Waugh, Co-founder and Managing Director 

Prior to setting up Country Insights Oliver was a director of JH&Co working on sovereign risk methodologies and investment strategies. Formerly Interim CEO of Fred Olsen, a leisure and transportation group in the Canary Islands. Has 20 years of banking experience including derivatives structuring and marketing, fixed income origination and investment banking coverage. Paul Domjan, Co-founder and Managing Director

Prior to setting up Country Insights, Paul was a director of JH&Co, where he was responsible for work on economic competitiveness and natural resources and was the process lead for scenario thinking and stakeholder engagement. He led the development of Quantitative Country Analytics. He is also active in policy, most recently as a Special Advisor to the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee of the UK Parliament. Prior to setting up JH&Co, Paul served as the first Energy Security Advisor to the US European Command of the US Department of Defense, was a member of the Shell scenarios team and consulted for the World Bank. Dr. Evghenia Sleptsova, Senior Associate

Evghenia currently specialises on macroeconomic and financial analysis, on the methodology of QCA and on qualitative analysis based on it. She was a lead author of the Sovereign Wealth Fund Review, published by Thomson Reuter's International Finance Review. Evghenia has a PhD from the University of Birmingham on Ukrainian trade with the EU. She also holds an MA in Political Economies of Russia and Eastern Europe from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, UCL, London, and a BA in Banking from the Academy of Economic Studies in Moldova. She has a number of publications – on the role of lobbying in the EU-Ukraine trade policy making, on trade liberalisation between Moldova and the European Union, and on labour migration from Moldova to the EU. Mike Liu, Associate


Mike Liu works on Quantitative Country Analytics and related investment strategies in emerging market debt and equity as well as broader financial analysis to support our consulting and research.Mike graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science with a MSc (with Distinction) in Finance and Economics. He also holds a BA in Banking and Finance from Peking University in Beijing, China. He is in the process of achieving the CFA designation and has successfully taken levels I and II. Mike previously worked at Credit Suisse, Bain & Co and a Chinese investment fund.Learn more...

Max Watson, Senior Academic Advisor

Max Watson is a Visiting Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford, and a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford. He is a Director of the Central Bank of Ireland, and Research Director of the UK consultancy John Howell and Co Ltd. Until 2007, he was adviser to the Director General of Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission. Previously he was at the IMF, where he was successively head of the International Capital Markets Division; mission chief to countries in the euro area and emerging Europe; and a Deputy Director of the Fund. Dr. Nick Dove, Modeling Consultant and Non-executive Director


Since entering the consultancy field as a founder of John Howell & Co Ltd, Dr Dove has specialised in advising governments, development agencies and financial institutions, notably on bank sector health in a macro-economic context, and has written authoritative reports on Sovereign Wealth Funds and infrastructure investment. Dr Dove was previously a senior equity analyst at UBS covering banks and other financials, where he advised top management of publically listed companies on strategy, communications and equity issuance, and a range of fund managers on stock and sector investment strategy.
