Dr. Nick Dove, Consultant and Non-executive Director
Since entering the consultancy field as a founder of John Howell & Co Ltd, Dr Dove has specialised in advising governments, development agencies and financial institutions, notably on bank sector health in a macro-economic context, and has written authoritative reports on Sovereign Wealth Funds and infrastructure investment. Dr Dove was previously a senior equity analyst at UBS covering banks and other financials, where he advised top management of publically listed companies on strategy, communications and equity issuance, and a range of fund managers on stock and sector investment strategy.
Nick Dove studied biochemistry at Cambridge University. He subsequently obtained a Unilever Award for his postgraduate work in cell culture and physiology and was an author of articles in learned journals. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1996.
In 1996 he joined UBS, becoming one of its leading bank equity analysts and an Executive Director, covering EU banks & other financial institutions, which also gave him exposure to banks in Eastern Europe, Latin America & Asia, and included privatisation and merger work. His advice to management and fund managers was built on: detailed modelling and multiple valuation methods; in-depth written reports but also terse summaries with clear recommendations; analysing the impact of regulatory issues; understanding disclosure issues; considering cultural and management issues; teamwork.
In that period his publications included ‘Detecting shareholder value in French banks’ (2000); ‘Eurobanks analyser’ (2001); ‘The future of asset management in Europe’ (2002); ‘Credit risk transfer’ (2003). Dr Dove's team was ranked best European all-sector research team 2001 by fund managers (Reuters) while individually he was ranked no. 5 among European bank analysts (Extel, 2002).
His independent consulting began alongside John Howell in 2003. Examples of advisory work include: a European development bank on investor relations (2003-4); Kazakh Central Bank on financial stability in a booming economy (2005-7); a European development bank on strategy (2007), a US investment bank on investor role play (2007); a major Kazakh bank on strategy and markets activities (2007-9); a UK PLC on costs of regulation (2008); creating a research arm for a major Kazakh bank (2008-9); alongside Marcia Favale-Tarter, advising BTA, Alliance and Samruk-Kazyna on balance sheet restructuring (2009).
Dr Dove was executive editor of two market-leading reports on Sovereign Wealth funds (2008-9), co-author of “Building Infrastructure into the Portfolio” (2010), and expert contributor to the report for the Irish Parliament on Ireland’s Banking Crisis (2010).
